Although the furnishings in the rooms are relatively minimalist, there’s a lot of cool artwork, decor and modern designs within the hotel.

3. Maylands Lodge
Maylands Lodge is a historic landmark property located in Newtown, an 8-minute drive outside of the Hobart city centre and waterfront.
If you’re looking for a quiet indulgence away from city-life, this could be a great option to check out.
With a striking facade, old world charm, newly renovated bathrooms and bedrooms, rustic brick walls, Tasmanian artwork throughout the property, and a shared cosy fireplace, it looks to be a wonderful place to stay.
Maylands Lodge is rated 9.7 out of 10, so clearly the guests agree!
However, the main downside is that it’s not walking distance to the city or its attractions. Getting to Hobart CBD from Maylands lodge is a 40 minute walk, and to get to the waterfront it would take you about 45 minutes.
If you’re not keen to catch transport into Hobart each day, or don’t enjoy walking, then this mightn’t be the best accommodation for you in Hobart, Tasmania.

THE VERDICT! – The Best Luxury Accommodation in Hobart
My goodness this has been a tough decision to make as all of the hotels look so grand.
If location wasn’t critical to me, my pick would probably be Mayland’s Lodge.
With a perfect balance between its historical heritage facade and rustic interior, modern rooms, large bathtub, breakfast included and a TV with streaming services (eg. Netflix), this place really knows how to draw a girl in.
However, I do think it is quite pricey given it’s not walking distance to the city.
If I was to choose this hotel, I’d probably just go for one of the cheaper rooms:
- Brownell Room ($395 per night) or the
- Pearce Room ($445 per night).
Given that location is really important to me, I think my top preference for best luxury accommodation in Tasmania (Hobart) would have to be the MACq 01 Hotel.
There’s nothing I love more than waking up and going for a run along a boardwalk as the sun rises. Given this hotel’s location right near the Franklin Waterfront, this is ideal for me.
I also love that it has a fitness centre, as again, I take full advantage of this when I travel.
Some other things that stand out to me about this hotel is that it offers a unique experience in each room. It also strives to educate you about the history of Tasmania, and not just the main sites to see.
I feel that you gain a much richer experience when you learn about the culture and history of the place you’re visiting. However, this hotel does come at a cost.
If you’re budget conscious traveller as I am, then you’d have to opt for the cheapest room (Hunter Street) which is around $360 per night.
The Hunter Street room does not come with a cool waterfront view like the premium rooms they show in the photos though. It does still have a balcony and city views.
If you want the complete experience of this hotel, you’d have to upgrade to the most expensive room – the premium waterfront terrace. This baby will make you drop $680 per night!
But, yikes! If you can afford that, you’re probably some kind of celebrity!
So, there you go.
My Top Recommendations for Luxury Hotels:
- MACq 01 Hotel – if location is important ($360 – $680 AUD per night)
- Maylands Lodge – if location isn’t important ($395 – $600 AUD per night)
Best Self-catered Apartment Accommodation in Hobart
Yay! We’re now onto one of my favourite types of accommodation – self-catered apartments!
When I travel, I’ll often treat myself to a self-catered apartment. Especially, if I have been travelling for a long period of time or have been roughing it.
After all, sometimes you just crave some personal space and flexibility.
The benefit of a self-catered apartment is that you can eat out when you want, but also do some home-cooked meals to save some cash!
You can also get all your laundry done, if you haven’t had a place to wash your dirty clothes throughout your trip (eg. if staying in hostels or road tripping around the state).
Here are my top picks when it comes to self-catered accommodation in Tasmania (Hobart).
1. Salamanca Inn
Now, this self-catered accommodation in Tasmania (Hobart) is pretty freaking cool!
Not only do you have access to a kitchen in your room and laundry facilities, but there’s also a rooftop pool and spa. Some of the larger rooms (Executive and Honeymoon Suites) even have their own spa bath too!
The room’s decor is relatively simple, but contains modern furniture and soft colour schemes.
Salamanca Inn also sits within a prime location – near various restaurants, the waterfront and just a short walk to Salamanca Place and the CBD (central business district).
They also have a:
- Beef & Seafood Grill restaurant on-site that makes local and international cuisine using fresh Tasmanian produce, and a
- Lounge bar where you can enjoy a cheeky cocktail or ale
If you’re planning to do a road-trip around Tasmania, then ensure to take advantage of their free on-site parking.

2. Zero Davey Boutique Apartment Hotel
This is another great option if you’re looking for a self-catered apartment.
The Zero Davey Boutique Apartment Hotel is located on the Sullivans Cove waterfront and is just a short walk to the Salamanca Market and the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery.
The apartments offer cosy accommodation with a private balcony and all of the main essentials you need – laundry facilities, dishwasher and a well-equipped kitchenette/ kitchen. Some of their apartments even offer stunning harbour views.
But the top perk of them all – they have a sauna AND a small fitness centre!
Oh, Zero Davey, you just won my heart. They’re literally two of my favourite things to do!
The main downside of this property is that parking on site is limited and costs $10 a day.

3. 110 Hampden Apartments
110 Hampden Apartments looks to be an interesting place to stay. It’s pretty much a large house or complex, converted into serviced apartments. Well, that’s what it looks like from the photos.

On arrival, the owners treat you to a complimentary:
- Toiletries box
- Laundry/Kitchen box

A very sweet gesture!
The facilities also look to be very clean and modern which I personally like and supposedly Unit 7 (and some of the others) has a great sea view.

4. Corinda Contemporary
Corinda Contemporary is a pretty cool and unique place to stay in Hobart.
Personally, I haven’t seen many other places like this accommodation in Tasmania (Hobart).
Although set inside a contemporary little cottage, don’t be fooled. These self-contained apartments have been renovated on the inside and contain stylish, bold, modern and colourful interiors.
There’s also a sliding door that opens up to a large balcony area with a dining table. This offers a cool place to hang out if the weather’s nice.
Although located in Glebe (the outskirts of the city), the apartment is just a short walk from popular restaurants, bars and cafes in the CBD (Central Business District).

THE VERDICT! – The Best Self-catered Apartment in Hobart
In my opinion, this decision was a ton easier than the luxury hotels. The winner has to be Salamanca Inn.
Let’s be honest…they had me at “rooftop pool and spa” 😃
I also appreciate that they have a restaurant and bar onsite, meaning that you can cook your own meals if you want to, or head down to the bar and restaurant.
This can be a nice way to meet people and socialise with other guests (if travelling solo), or to simply treat yourself to a cocktail.
The Salamanca Inn is also just a short walk from many of the main sites in the city (which I love) but on the flip side, they offer free on-site parking too.
This is great given that many of us who travel to Tasmania intend to do some degree of road-tripping along the coast.
For all the facilities you get access to at this property, I feel that the price per night is really reasonable ($229 – $420 AUD per night).
My second favourite would be the Zero Davey Boutique Apartment Hotel, simply because of the facilities you get access to for $220-$280 AUD per night.
Yes you do have to pay an additional fee for parking, however if you don’t plan on hiring a car, then this accommodation in Tasmania (Hobart) could be a great option for you!
My Top Recommendations for Self-serviced Apartments
- Salamanca Inn – Given the breadth of facilities and location ($229 – $420 AUD per night)
- Zero Davey Boutique Apartment Hotel – Also great facilities and cheaper room rates ($220 – $280 AUD per night

Most Unique & Historical Accommodation in Hobart
Something I didn’t know about Hobart (until after I researched it), was the amount of incredible history present in the area.
Although Australia doesn’t have a great deal of old buildings like Europe does, there are still some sandstone treasures and restored mansions in Hobart, Tasmania.
In this section, I’m going to be focusing on accommodation in Tasmania (Hobart) that is unique and still standing from the 19th – early 20th century.

Lenna of Hobart is another type of “old world” accommodation in Hobart, Tasmania, to check out. It’s not just a place to stay and rest your head, but a present-day window into Hobart’s past.
This 1874-built sandstone mansion puts you right on the historic doorstep of Hobart’s vibrant waterfront.
Located in Battery Point it’s just a short walk from Sulliman’s Cove, Salamanca Place, the CBD and the ferry terminal.
Although an old building, it has been restored and renovated to showcase its former glory.

THE VERDICT! – The Best Unique/Historical Accommodation
If you’re looking for an authentic historical experience then I would go ahead with Hadley’s Orient Hotel.
Originally built in 1834 and now listed as a heritage property, I feel there’s something really special about that. I’ve personally never stayed in a hotel with as much history as that.
It’s also in a prime location, right in the heart of Hobart CBD. Therefore, the majority of Hobart’s top attractions are only a short walking distance away.
I also feel that the price of $209 AUD per night is reasonable given the facilities you have access to, particularly if sharing with someone else.
My second runner up would be Somerset on the Pier Hobart, because I naturally love being near the water. The location is truly prime real estate.
The furnishings look to be quite nice as shown in the photos and I like that the apartments have fully equipped kitchens.
However, there’s a lot more mixed reviews on this property, therefore I feel it’d be safer choosing one of the other hotels to ensure you’re not disappointed.
My Top Recommendations for Unique and Historical Accommodation
- Hadley’s Orient Hotel – A heritage property located in the heart of Hobart CBD ($200 – $300 AUD per night)
- Somerset on the Pier Hobart – Self-serviced apartment located on the waterfront ($305 – $445 AUD per night)

The reviews are pretty good, however I do find it a touch odd that the most recent review I can find is from the 17th of April 2020. Maybe due to COVID-19 restrictions? 🤔

5. Alabama Hotel Hobart
Alabama Hotel offers budget accommodation in the heart of Hobart.
In my opinion, this hotel looks really cool. There’s even flamingos scattered throughout the place.
No, not real ones…sorry to disappoint! 😋
It has the vibes and decor of a hostel – super funky and eclectic, but without the typical bunk beds and shared bunk rooms. Instead, you get a full private room like in a hotel but have a shared bathroom, like in a hostel.
Alabama Hotel is just a short walk to many of the main attractions, it’s in a great location.
On-site you can also enjoy a drink or snack at the bar or relax outdoors on the terrace. There are also various restaurants nearby.

Other Budget Accommodation to Check Out
Of all the budget accommodation in Hobart, those places stood out the most to me as good options. However there are a few others I’d suggest checking out.
Here’s some other budget accommodation and hostels I check out to see if they’re better suited to your needs/desires:
THE VERDICT! – The Best Budget Accommodation in Hobart
Similar to the luxury accommodation, choosing a venue in this section was hard as each of them are really different.
My #1 preference would have to be The Nook Backpackers. If I was travelling by myself, this is where I’d stay.
For $25-$30 bucks, you can score a bed in one of their bunk rooms. This is super cheap, and they have a whole range of facilities that you can enjoy during your stay.
I haven’t found much good quality accommodation available for that kind of price!
I also appreciate that they are locally owned and operated, and have been rated 9.6/10 by over 500 travellers. I feel that this hostel would be perfect if you are a solo traveller who wants to be within walking distance to the main sites.
Obviously there are pros and cons of travelling solo, however I truly believe that hostels are one of the best ways to meet people.
My second runner up would be Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse. However, I really struggled to find any available dates for this property.
It makes me wonder whether they’re even taking bookings at the moment due to COVID, or if they’re just incredibly popular.
My Top Recommendations for Budget Accommodation
- The Nook Backpackers – Cheap accommodation with a range of handy facilities and rave reviews ($25 – $100 AUD per night)
- Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse – Nice clear and modern hostel accommodation (Approx $100 AUD per night)
